Ian Donald was born in Cornwall on 27 December 1910. His father John Donald was a doctor and his mother, Helen Barrow Wilson was a noted amateur pianist. As John Donald was in poor health, the family moved to South Africa in 1925. In less than two years both of John and Helen died, effectively leaving Ian at the age of 16 as the head of a family of four teenagers.
